Artificial Intelligence is entering a decisive decade. As breakthroughs accelerate and the horizon of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) comes into sharper focus, humanity is confronted with profound questions – not only about what we can build, but about why, how, and for whom we build it.
AI 2030 was founded on a simple but urgent belief: that the future of AI must be responsible, inclusive, and aligned with human values. Today, that belief has grown into a global movement of more than 5,000 AI professionals across over 50 countries. Our community brings together technologists, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and civil society leaders who are committed to shaping a future where AI benefits humanity, not harms it.
At the heart of this movement is our AI 2030 Global Fellows Program, which represents some of the world’s most committed Responsible AI thought leaders and practitioners. Our Fellows come from diverse backgrounds – spanning AI engineering, data science, governance, ethics, public policy, and social impact. Among them are individuals such as:
Salima Bhimani, PhD, Phaedra Boinodiris, Jimmy Yang, Sandeep Maira, Seyhun Hepdogan, Arjun Ravi Kannan, Jamiel Sheikh, Giorgio Natili, Harry Mendell, Diya Wynn, Caroline Abadeer, Manas Talukdar, Shanthi Gudavalli, Nick Schmidt, Dominique Gribot-Carroz, Aaron Gustafson, Bryan Reimer, Jesus Gonzalez, Aditya Gupta, Karthik Mahalingam, Josh Richards, Ankit Gupta, Sanjoy Ghosh, Julia Z. Fu, Aashita Jain, Shailesh Kadam, Nikhil Madhusudhan, Kereeta Whyte (LLM, MA), Vasudha Hegde, Sandhya Chalasani, Dushyant Singh Sengar, Mohan Krishna Mannava, Qian S., Daniela Muhaj, Vincent Mao, Naveen Dhar, Balachandra Shanabhag, Zhaoying (Dorothy) Du, Joe Peedikayil CRC, CTP,Jan Kwapisz, Ph.D., Rebecca Gonzales, Bahareh Nakisa, PhD, Ranjit Aneesh, Vanessa Gomes, NACD.DC, Albert L., Parth Saxena, Dr. Hemachandran K, Prashant Vajpayee, Jiaqi Chen, CIPP/US, Krishna Mula, Fabio Teixeira, NACD.DC, Veronica Canton, Esq., CIPP/US/E, CIPM, CIPT, FIP, Kate Carter, MSc, MALM, Dr. Anderson D Prewitt, Dr.Colleen Lyons, Sai Mahesh Vuppalapati, Kate Shcheglova-Goldfinch, MSc MBA, Aarohi Tripathi, June Lau, MD, MGM., Vivek Kumar, Brinnae Bent, PhD, Adam Ennamli, Arkin Gupta, Joseph BIDIAS,Ms.Eng, MD/Ph.D, John Ferguson, MD, FACS, Vinay Singh, Kavita Singh, Jordan W. These Global Fellows do not merely observe the AI transformation from the sidelines – they actively contribute to shaping its trajectory through research, implementation, policymaking, and global advocacy.
To bring their voices into the global conversation, AI 2030 has launched the “2030 Pathway” Series, featuring the latest thinking, research, and perspectives from our Global Fellows. This report is authored by our Senior Fellow Josh Richards, who dives deeply into one of the most critical and debated topics of our time: Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
A question I am often asked is simple, yet deeply unsettling:
Is AI destined to become our Terminator once AGI arrives?
And if the answer is yes — how do we continue scientific advancement and commercial innovation while building our own potential destroyer?
If the answer is no — how do we ensure that AGI evolves in alignment with human values, dignity, and long-term well-being?
What futures are possible?
What choices must we make today to stay on the right path tomorrow?
These are not easy questions. There are no convenient answers. But they are precisely the kind of questions we must have the courage to ask.
In this report, Josh brings rigor, nuance, and thoughtful exploration to these difficult issues, offering us structured ways to think about possible futures, pathways for alignment, and realistic scenarios for AGI development. His ideas challenge us, and they invite us not just to react to the future – but to shape it.
We are deeply grateful to our Global Fellows for their intellectual leadership and pursuit of truth. The views expressed in this report represent the author’s independent thinking and do not necessarily reflect the official position of AI 2030. However, we value this opportunity to share their work as part of a broader, global dialogue on the future of responsible AI.
We also thank our broader community and partners for supporting and amplifying this Responsible AI movement. Progress depends not on a single voice, but on a chorus of diverse perspectives – technologists and ethicists, innovators and regulators, dreamers and pragmatists.
We warmly welcome your reflections, critiques, and contributions – from both within and beyond the AI 2030 community. Because shaping the future of AGI cannot be the responsibility of a few; it must be a shared mission of humanity.
As we look toward 2030 and beyond, let us remember:
The future of AI is not a technological destiny – it is a human choice.
And choices, when guided by wisdom, courage, and responsibility, can change the world.
